Peterborough Singer Hopes to Turn Heads on The Voice

Determined Peterborough singer John Quinn is hoping he can make more than merely a fleeting impression on music legends when he appears on BBC One’s talent show The Voice.

John Quinn – better known on the Peterborough music scene as the lead singer of band Fleeting Minds – will appear on BBC One’s The Voice UK on Saturday (1 February).

Father-of-two John (31), who works in sales for Coca Cola has already filmed his performance for the show, which last week was watched by 7.8 million viewers.

But he was staying tight-lipped on whether he impressed judges Kylie Minogue, Tom Jones, Will.i.am and Ricky Wilson, but said he had loved the experience.

He said: “It was amazing. I love performing and being on stage. The fantastic audience really bought it to life.

“When I was on stage, the moments I spent waiting for the band to strike up felt like an eternity, and looking at the chairs, knowing there were music legends behind them was very nerve wracking.

“But I wouldn’t change anything about my performance.”

John performed the Jake Bugg song Lightening Bolt, playing his acoustic guitar to try and make it through to the next stage of the competition.

He said: “I got some amazing feedback from the judges, especially from Will.i.am. I am not a fan of any particular judge on the show but Ricky Wilson’s work with the Kaiser Chiefs is closer to music we do with the band.”

On the day of filming, John was supported by fiancee Jackay (32), and children Lainie (5) and Joani (1), who watched from the green room.

He said: “They have all been very supportive. Lainie was very taken with Marvin, the new presenter, and kept talking about him.

“The band have also been very supportive and are 100 per cent behind me going on the show – in fact they pushed me to do it.”

While John is looking at advancing his solo career, the band is still going strong, and their latest single and video, Dynamite, being released over the weekend.

He said: “I’ve got a lot of influences – from Paul Weller, Oasis and Noel Gallagher, The Beatles and Kasabian, but I will listen to anything, I’ve started listening to old Motown and Northern Soul, and even things like One Direction.

“I applied having watched the show since the first series. It was something that really appealed to me. I saw an advert at the end of the last series, and thought why not have a go? I’m glad I did as its been a fantastic experience.”

If John impresses any of the judges, he will progress to the next round, a knockout round, before the live finals take place.

The next episode of The Voice will be broadcast on BBC One at 7.10pm on Saturday.
